Our commitment
We want everyone in the Bali Nyonga family to be able to use this website: elders and first-time internet users, people using screen readers or keyboards, people with low vision, and people reading in their second or third language. This statement covers the whole website in English, French and German.
Conformance target and status
Our target is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, level AA.
The website is partially conformant while it is being built: we design and test every page to meet WCAG 2.2 AA, but we have not yet completed a full independent audit. We will update this statement after that audit.
What we have done
- Text can be enlarged to 200% and the layout adapts to any screen size, from a small phone upwards.
- Every page works with a keyboard alone, with a clearly visible focus outline.
- Pages use real headings, landmarks, lists and tables, so screen readers can navigate them.
- Colours meet contrast requirements in the light and dark themes, and there is a high-contrast theme.
- Meaning is never given by colour alone.
- Animations are gentle, and they switch off if you have asked your device to reduce motion.
- Forms have visible labels, clear hints and an error summary that links to each problem. They work without JavaScript.
- Illustrations have text descriptions in each language, or are marked as decorative.
- Maps and diagrams have a text alternative, such as the list of chapters below the chapter map.
- Mungaka words are marked as a different language so screen readers can handle them.
- We write in plain language and avoid jargon.
Known limitations
We know about these issues and are working on them:
- Audio recordings of Mungaka (in the glossary and stories) will get written transcripts as each recording is added. Until then, the written word and its meaning are always shown next to the audio.
- PDF magazines may not be fully accessible. Each issue will also be available as a web page; if you need a PDF in another format, please ask.
- The registration app is a separate service. We are asking its provider for its own accessibility statement and will link to it here.
If you find something not listed here, please tell us.
How we test
- Automated checks on every page in every language each time the site is built.
- Manual keyboard testing of every page template.
- Screen reader testing with VoiceOver on iPhone and Mac, and NVDA on Windows.
- Zoom and text-spacing checks, and testing on small phones.
- Testing in the light, dark and high-contrast themes, and with reduced motion.
- Feedback sessions with members, including elders and people who use assistive technology.
Tell us about a problem
If something on this website doesn’t work for you, or you need information in a different format, please tell us:
- Use the contact form and choose Accessibility as the topic.
- Or email access@bcaeurope.org.
Tell us the page address and what went wrong. We will reply within five working days, and if we can’t fix the problem straight away, we’ll tell you when we expect to, and give you the information another way in the meantime.
Access at the convention
This statement is about the website. For access at De Vere Wokefield Estate, such as step-free routes, accessible rooms or a quiet space, see the Venue page or contact us with the topic Accessibility.
