Culture

Culture at the centre of everything

The 2027 convention puts Bali Nyonga culture at the heart of every day: the Njang on Thursday night, our uniforms at the Official Opening on Friday, cultural dancing on Saturday, and Mungaka in the programme, not in the margins.

The weekend

Four moments that carry our culture

These are the moments our people love. 2027 keeps every one of them and puts them all on one estate.

  1. Thursday evening

    The Njang

Our reunion night, the Meet and Greet, comes alive with traditional music: the Njang, on the estate.

See it in the programme: The Njang
  2. Friday evening

Our uniforms and the Official Opening

The Official Opening is held in our uniforms. Culture, culture, culture, through to midnight.

See it in the programme: Our uniforms and the Official Opening
  3. Saturday afternoon

Cultural dancing and the dance competition

After the General Assembly and lunch, the afternoon belongs to cultural dancing and the dance competition.

See it in the programme: Cultural dancing and the dance competition
  4. All weekend

    The Lela

Everything our people love stays in 2027, and the Lela is part of it. Children meet it through the Lela Olympiad.

See it in the programme: The Lela

From the 2027 convention strategy

Bali Nyonga built the Lela so its people would always find their way back to each other.

Word of the Week

Mungaka, one word at a time

Mungaka is the language of Bali Nyonga. Each week we share one word, with its meaning and the voice of a native speaker.

Word of the Week

The first word is on its way

Our cultural committee chooses and approves every word. Nothing appears here until they have done so.

  • The tone-marked spelling
  • A recording by a native speaker
  • An example and its meaning

Coming from our cultural committee

Deeper stories, told by the people who hold them

In preparation

Our history, the Toghu and its patterns, our music, recipes and the voices of our elders will be written with, and approved by, the cultural committee. We would rather wait than get them wrong.

  • The history of Bali Nyonga
  • The Toghu and its patterns
  • Music and the Njang
  • Recipes from home
  • Elders' voices

Dress guide

What to wear, day by day

Wearing our uniforms and the Toghu, the embroidered traditional attire, is part of the celebration. The Official Opening is held in uniforms; everything else is an invitation, not a rule.

  1. Thursday

    Meet and Greet

    Toghu welcome

A reunion night with the Njang. Come comfortable, and bring your Toghu if you like.

  2. Friday

    Official Opening

    Uniforms

The Official Opening is held in our uniforms.

  3. Saturday

    Cultural dancing and the Gala

    Toghu welcome

A wonderful day to wear your Toghu. At the Gala, wear whatever makes you proud.

  4. Sunday

    Barbecue and goodbyes

    Relaxed

On the lawns. Comfortable clothes and good shoes for the grass.

Final dress notes for each event come with the programme, including details about uniforms.
